A Journey of Postcards Hôtel Tassel Belgium

Hôtel Tassel

The narrow, symmetrical front facade. Built for the Belgian scientist Edmond Tassel, this building is considered by some scholars to be the first Art Nouveau building in Brussels. It is certainly Horta's first mature work in this style. Horta made a break with the past here by using stone and the modern material, metal, in domestic architecture.

The Hôtel Tassel is a typical townhouse in the heart of Brussels, the capital city of Belgium. At least, that's what it initially appears to be. This Art nouveau building looks rather similar to the other houses in the Rue Paul Emile Janson, a side street of Avenue Louise, a major thoroughfare in the city.
